About Your Appearance

Your signature on the citation is your promise to appear before the court on or before the appearance date that appears on your citation.

Note: The Court must be contacted for all Construction and School Zone violations.

Juveniles -  Age 16 & younger

All juveniles must contact the court in person or by mail on or before the appearance date on the citation to be reset for a court date. Juveniles must appear in open court before the Judge with their parent or legal guardian on the reset date.

If you were issued a ticket from a City of Elgin Police Officer you must appear either in person or by mail by that date.Your appearance date is listed on your citation directly below your electronic signature. This Appear on or Before date is usually 10 calendar days from the date of offense. The Elgin Municipal Court does not require your appearance before the judge in open court if you are an adult. You have options to dispose of your citation at your convenience at the Municipal Court Clerk's Office, as long as you do so on or before the appearance date listed. 

If your appearance is by mail, your plea must be postmarked on or before the appearance date. Neither telephone calls nor fax transmissions constitute an appearance. Neither driving safety courses nor deferred disposition orders will be considered if your plea is not received on or before your appearance date. 


If you have been arrested for a Misdemeanor Class C offense that originated from the Elgin Municipal Court and have posted an appearance, cash or personal recognizance bond to be released from jail, you must appear in court on or before your court order to appear date given by the Judge when you were released.
If you have are not received sure of your court date, it is your responsibility to contact the court to verify your appearance date. 

Court Locations

Municipal Court is held in the Elgin Public Library Civic Center, 404 N Main Street. PreTrials are held in the City Hall Annex, 310 N Main Street. You must be scheduled to appear. See the Calendar above for upcoming court dates. For a listing of those scheduled appear, click the applicable docket on the left.

Note: Dockets are posted at least 72 hours in advance to the court setting.

Rules of Attire and Conduct

Attendees to the Elgin Municipal Court should adhere to the guidelines found on Rules of Attire and Conduct

***Make sure you dress appropriately for court. No hats, tank tops, short shirts, low cut shirts or see through materials. Skirts and dresses should come down no less than 3 inches above the knee. If your pants do not fit your waist make sure you have a belt to keep them up. ***
