Holiday by the Tracks!

Ring in the holidays with a downtown celebration that will fill you with the spirit of the season.  On Saturday, December 5th, young and old can enjoy pictures with Santa Claus, downtown shopping, a holiday Bazaar and more in downtown Elgin.  The day includes the River Valley Farmers Market, pictures with Santa Claus, the Quanah Parker Exhibit at Depot Museum, shopping and restaurant specials throughout downtown.  Jamie Hausladen, chairperson for Holiday by the Tracks, shared "the day promises to be great fun with something for everyone in our beautiful downtown!"  The River Valley Farmers’ Market will have fresh produce and baked goods available, in addition to handmade arts and crafts, unique items and one of a kind creations by artists from the Central Texas area.  Live music and entertainment throughout the day will spread more holiday cheer.

The Elgin Volunteer Fire Department sponsors the Lighted Christmas Parade at dusk through downtown and a Live Nativity produced by St. Peter’s Lutheran Church follows the parade in Veterans Memorial Park downtown.   The parade is a collection point for the Blue Santa Toy Drive.   Bring an unwrapped new toy and help fill the trailers in the parade.  Toys are wrapped and distributed to local children in need through the Elgin Police Department.  Held at dusk the parade presents a magical lighted wonderland and Santa Claus waving from an antique fire engine through downtown Elgin.  The St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Live Nativity follows the parade at Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Elgin on Depot Street.  The Chamber of Commerce, Main Street Board, and City of Elgin Community Development Department organize Holiday by the Tracks as a community celebration of the holidays.  A complete schedule can be found at
www.elgintx.com.

Elgin is home to two Christmas tree farms, both of which have gift shops, games for the kids, and beautiful scenery.  Elgin Christmas Tree Farm and Evergreen Christmas Tree Farm are locally owned and operated and are open throughout the fall and winter months.  Visit
www.evergreen-farms.com and www.elginchristmastreefarm.com.  Down Home Ranch, located just east of Elgin, offers a holiday store and home grown poinsettias. Visit www.downhomeranch.org.

Support the businesses and organizations that make our community a great place to live!

The sights and sounds of Christmas are all around us as the season swings into full gear. Elgin is home to world famous Sausage, Christmas tree Farms, and many organizations that are dedicated to sharing holiday cheer with those less fortunate. The Volunteer Fire Department Lighted Christmas Parade, held on Saturday at dusk, includes a great variety of lighted entries from floats to horses.  And it is a collection point for toys for the Blue Santa program.  In partnership with the Elgin Police department the toys collected are wrapped and distributed to local children in need.  As Texans, we are already proud of our state, but when you are from Elgin, you get to enjoy the added bonus of being the Sausage Capital of Texas.  Nothing compares to ordering Elgin sausage and having it shipped to friends and family around the country or simply bringing a plate of it to the office holiday party.  Two of the largest Christmas tree farms in Bastrop County are in Elgin.  Folks come from all over the greater Austin area to visit our Christmas tree farms where they make holiday memories together.  Free pictures with Santa Claus throughout December at downtown businesses, Christmas window displays, and a holiday concert all add to the joy of the holiday season. Our local businesses and organizations are helping make beautiful holiday memories for thousands of folks in Elgin and throughout the Austin area.

Walk or Bike to School Day

Flyer

Elgin ISD And the City of Elgin are promoting another Walk to School day on Wednesday, December 9.  Neidig Elementary,  Elgin Elementary, Elgin Middle School and Elgin High School have new sidewalks that provide safe routes to school for many of the students at those campuses.  Use this opportunity to check out the option of a safe route for your student and see if walking or biking will work for your family.  Booker T Washington Elementary school will be celebrating with morning recess and walking the track on campus.

This is a great opportunity to review safe walking and biking practices with your family, and to remind us all about safe transit in general.  As a driver, choose to practice no texting or phone calls while you are driving, look for pedestrians and cyclists, and remember to stop when a school bus is loading or unloading.  Walking is one of the best things we can do to improve and maintain our health.  Everyone can take advantage of the sidewalks around town and find a favorite safe route!  For more information visit: Texas Safe Routes

Depot Museum

Depot Museum

The museum is open five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday, from 2 - 5 pm. Admission is free.

The Elgin Historical Assn. is excited to announce that a special traveling exhibit called, "Quanah & Cynthia Ann Parker: A Pictorial Exhibit of Their Story," is now open.  It consists of over 40 rarely seen photos as they make their way around Texas, initiated by the Texas Heritage Trails program.  In 1836 Cynthia Ann was taken by a Comanche raiding party, and over years, she became wife to a Comanche Chief and mother to children, including Quanah. Cynthia Ann was taken back by Texas Rangers. Quanah became a very important Comanche leader. Many people know the basic story, and this show will demonstrate the tragedy of these two courageous individuals.  The exhibit will remain in Elgin until the end of the year.

Rotating Mini-exhibits add some sparkle about current holidays and events. The Museum also has an extensive photo collection and souvenirs for purchase. For inquiries call 512-285-2000. Read more or Follow us on Facebook
