Celebrating 20 years as a Texas Main Street City

The Union Depot Museum in historic downtown Elgin opens its newest exhibit Saturday August 28, Main Street Elgin.  The exhibit will share the story of Main Street Elgin and the development of events such as the Hogeye Festival.  Museum hours are Tuesday through Sunday 2 to 5.  Group tours may be arranged by calling 285-2000.

Celebrate Grandparents Day

Wednesday, September 8th offers dinner and activities for grandparents and children at the library.  Children can invite grandparents to this special event designed just for celebrating grandparents!  See Melinda at the Library to have an invitation sent to grandparents. 

Fall Festival at the Library

October 7th from 5:00-8:00p.m. at the library wear a costume and celebrate the fall season!  The evening includes games, treats, crafts, costume contest, food and more.

Citizen’s Police Academy 

The Citizen’s Police Academy exists to foster better communication between citizens and the police department through education.  Citizens will gain insight into how officers perform their duties and how the department serves the community.  The academy includes fifteen weeks of classes held on Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:30pm.  The instructors are officers and employees of the Elgin Police Department.  There will be hands on activities such as actual crime scene processing, pistol shooting, high-risk traffic stops, time at the pistol range and much more.  The next academy will start in the fall and class sizes are limited.  You can register for this free academy by downloading an application here http://www.elgintx.com/policechief.asp   or contacting Assistant Chief Phil Taylor at 512-285-5757 or email ptaylor@pd.ci.elgin.tx.us.  

National Night Out in Elgin, Texas

Tuesday, October 5, 2010 

Meet your neighbors and learn about crime prevention.  This event is held in cooperation with Bastrop County Sheriffs Department.  In 2009 Elgin had the highest number of participants of any city in Bastrop County.  Texas had the highest level of participation nationwide and has held that title for 15 years in a row.  Neighbors may host block parties in the evening from approximately 7pm to 9pm.  The Elgin Police Department provides crime prevention information and neighborhoods can set up a neighborhood watch program that evening.  Police officers and their patrol vehicles will visit parties and neighbors will be able to get to know the officers.  These parties are a great opportunity to meet neighbors and share some fun fellowship.  Register your party with Elgin Police Department by calling John Corbett at 285-5757 or email him at jcorbett@pd.ci.elgin.tx.us 

The Bastrop County wide kick-off for National Night out will be held Tuesday, September 28, at 7pm National Night Out Kick-off at 3H Cattle Company.  Anyone hosting a block party is invited to attend.  Elgin’s participation has grown every year we hope you’ll be part of taking a bite out of crime! 

 

Austin Community College

Elgin will have the opportunity to vote on joining the ACC district and providing higher education in Elgin for in-district rates.  The local campus could open for business by the Fall of 2013 and would be located at County Line Road and Hwy. 290 east of Doc’s Country Store.  ACC offers classes in a host of disciplines that transfer to Texas public universities. ACC is the largest feeder school to UT Austin and Texas State University. ACC has 182 Workforce Education Degrees and Certificates; and, it has 75 certificates in a variety of fields that can be completed in one year or less.  ACC ranks among the Top Ten (out of 50) of Texas’ community college districts in terms of dollar value received by district residents. The ACC tuition rate for in-district residents is $42 per credit hour.  The local property tax assessment would be .0946 per $100 valuation (.09 for maintenance and operations and .0046 to retire facilities bonds).  ACC has a  seniors/disabled tax exemption.  For more information visit www.elginacc.org or http://www.austincc.edu/annexation/elgin.php   Early Voting will be October 18 – 29.  Election Day November 2.

Exhibit Opens at the Depot Museum

The Elgin Historical Association invites everyone to see the latest exhibit of photographs taken by the citizens of Elgin beginning September 9, 2009 at the Depot Museum

The exhibit features sections devoted to work, school, the land, faith, home and town scenes and buildings. They vary in scale from views of Elgin Main Street taken from the EISD bucket truck to micro-level photos of light bulbs and drinking fountains at school. 43 photographers contributed pictures.

Admission to the museum is free. Opening hours are 2-5 pm every day except Monday.  Located at Depot Square and Main Street in Historic Downtown Elgin. 

 

Safe Trick Or Treat

Save the date!  The annual Safe Trick or Treat in Veterans Park and historic Downtown Elgin will be Sunday October 31 from 6 to 8.  Games, treats, a haunted tent, costume contest and more!  Volunteers needed for this fun event call 281-5724 ext. 27 or email pcarter@ci.elgin.tx.us 

  

Holiday By Tracks

Saturday December 4, 2010 from 10am to 8pm at Veterans’ Memorial Park.  Kick off the holiday season with pictures with Santa, a holiday bazaar, live music, the VFD Lighted Holiday Parade and the St Peters Lutheran Church live Nativity.  A new event feature this year is an auction of decorated Christmas trees after the parade to benefit local non-profit organizations.  To volunteer, sign up for a booth, or get more information about the trees please call 281-5724 ext. 27 or email pcarter@ci.elgin.tx.us

 Weekly trash Service Information 
Weekly trash service for residents of the City of Elgin includes the following:  blue recycle box for tin, plastic, aluminum and paper, the blue cart for household trash, up to three extra bags, boxes or containers of household trash and four bundles of brush, as well as small bulky items that can easily be handled by one person.  Brush must be bundled with string into lengths of three feet or less and weigh no more than forty pounds.

Additional Recycling Information
City of Elgin residents receive curbside pick up recycling weekly.  A recycling station for oil, aluminum, tin and plastic is available at Precinct Four County Barn located at Bull Run Road and Central Avenue.  Paper recycling is available at all Elgin ISD School campuses. Paper items that are accepted are newspapers, magazines, office paper, paperback books and catalogues.  Phone books are not accepted

Spring Cleaning? 
Use Bulky trash pick up service! 

City of Elgin residents may request bulky trash pick up once per month by calling 1-800-252-3586.  Pick up occurs the first Monday of each month. Items that can be put curbside are box springs, mattresses, large pieces of furniture, stoves, washers, dryers and appliances that have had the refrigerant removed and are red tagged.  Arrangements must be made with Allied/Republic Waste Services in advance of the pick up day. The numbers to call are either 512-247-5647 or 1-800-252-3586.

  

 

 


Wildcat Flags
for Sale

The Elgin Main Street Board is celebrating 20 years as a Texas Main Street City.  Celebrations include purple and white flags emblazoned with the wildcat mascot and the words Elgin, Texas.  These full size flags can be flown at anytime at your home or business but are especially fun to have during Western Days, community events, and youth sport seasons.  Flags may be purchased for $25 at Elgin City Hall 310 North Main Street or Dorothy’s Jewelry and Gifts 104 Depot Street.  Or by email pcarter@ci.elgin.tx.us shipping and handling charges will apply for mail order requests.  For more information visit www.elgintx.com

You may now receive your City of Elgin water bill via e-mail!  You will receive your bill around the first of the month and be able to view the consumption as usual.  We have the option to mail and e-mail the bill, mail only or e-mail only.  Please call 281-5724 or e-mail Melissa Lipiec (mlipiec@ci.elgin.tx.us) to sign up for Utility bill by Email.  Please specify if you want e-mail only or both e-mail and snail mail.
